Del Maguey Madrecuixe Mezcal is a limited edition release from the Vino de Mezcal series, produced in the lush and remote San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca, where the Red Ant River flows. Crafted by Marcos, son of Paciano, this mezcal is made from the wild Madrecuixe agave, a tall, cylindrical maguey with leaves that grow upward from the ground. The mature agaves are earth-roasted, naturally fermented with airborne microbes, and twice distilled in the traditional, centuries-old Oaxacan hand-crafted style, resulting in a rare and elegant expression.
This mezcal opens with vibrant vegetal and green notes of banana leaf, green papaya, alfalfa, tarragon, and fresh bamboo, which evolve into circus peanuts and sweet tropical fruits, including mango, pineapple, and chicozapote. On the palate, it is silky and medium-bodied, offering a clean balance of savory and fruity tones with a long, dry, and dusty finish. With 47% alcohol by volume (ABV), equivalent to 94 proof, like all Del Maguey Single Village Mezcals, it is a spirit to be savored slowly, never shot, to appreciate its complexity.
