Del Maguey San Luis del Rio Azul Mezcal

Del Maguey San Luis del Rio Azul Mezcal is a rare and distinctive Mezcal crafted from Blue Weber agave in San Luis del Rio, offering a glimpse into how tequila may have tasted many years ago. The story of this mezcal began during the agave scarcity in Jalisco between 2000 and 2004, when truckers traveled south to purchase Espadin from palenquero Paciano Cruz Nolasco to sustain tequila production. They brought with them baby maguey Azul plants, which were cultivated and allowed to mature for over seven years before being used to create this unique mezcal.

The mature maguey Azul is earth-roasted, naturally fermented with airborne microbes, and twice distilled in the traditional, hand-crafted Oaxacan way, without blending, preserving the authenticity of centuries-old mezcal production. With 47% alcohol by volume (ABV), 94 proof, Azul presents a creamy mouthfeel, complemented by bright citrus notes and dried tropical fruit, such as banana chip, with a sweet, green, herbaceous character. It evolves with wet stone qualities and a touch of white peppercorn, finishing with a medium-long and balanced aftertaste. Like all Del Maguey Single Village Mezcals, it is designed to be sipped and savored slowly, not shot.

Del Maguey San Luis del Rio Azul Mezcal has been recognized with high accolades, including 95 points and the Tried & True Award at the Ultimate Spirits Challenge, as well as 96 points and an Extraordinary rating at the same competition. Though noted as discontinued in fiscal year 2022, this mezcal remains a celebrated and memorable part of the Del Maguey collection.
