Introduced in 1986, Yuengling Black and Tan was among the first hand-created draft blends to lead this style of brewing in the United States. Modeled after a traditional English Half and Half, the beer is a deliberate blend of two established Yuengling styles, 60% Dark Brewed Porter and 40% Premium Beer. This specific ratio was developed to balance the depth of a dark porter with the lighter character of a premium lager, resulting in a rich, dark brew with a layered flavor profile.

The use of dark-roasted malts brings out hints of caramel and coffee, giving Yuengling Black and Tan a flavor complexity that sets it apart from standard domestic lagers.
